Jörn Callies

Jörn is a Professor of Oceanography and Environmental Science in the Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences at Caltech. He holds a Diplom degree from the University of Hamburg, Germany, and a Ph.D. from the MIT–WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography.

Shane Zhang

Shane is a Seismological Laboratory Director’s Postdoctoral Scholar and working on seismic ocean tomography as well as applications of distributed acoustic sensing to oceanography. He is co-advised by Zhongwen Zhan.

Xihan Zhang

Xihan is a postdoc working on understanding the balanced and unbalanced signals in SWOT data to learn about the dynamics of meso- and submesoscale turbulence in the upper ocean.

Jack Skinner

Jack is a postdoc working on characterizing the statistics of geostrophic turbulence and internal waves using methods that go beyond the power spectrum. This may be useful to distinguish between these different types of motion and different flavors of geostrophic turbulence in satellite data. He is co-advised by Albion Lawrence.

Henry Peterson

Henry graduated from the Environmental Science and Engineering program and is now working as a postdoc in the group. He is seeking a better understanding of basin-scale flow driven by bottom-intensified mixing and has developed a finite-element planetary-geostrophic ocean model. [website]

Rahul Arun

Rahul is a Foster and Coco Stanback Postdoctoral Fellow working in the group to understand balanced meso- and submesoscale turbulence in the upper ocean as revealed by SWOT. [website]

Scott Conn

Scott is a graduate student in the Environmental Science and Engineering program and NASA FINESST recipient, working in the group to better understand the interaction between near-inertial waves and eddies. [website]

Yue (Luna) Bai

Luna is a graduate student in the Environmental Science and Engineering program and NASA FINESST recipient, working in the group to better understand the time scales and degree of balance of submesoscale turbulence as well as the energetics of fronotgenesis.

Haakon Ludvig Langeland Ervik

Haakon is a graduate student in the Environmental Science and Engineering program, working in the group to develop new methods to measure large-scale ocean temperatures with floats and acoustics. [website]

Shriya Fruitwala

Shriya is graduate student in the Environmental Science and Engineering program, working on small-scale turbulence on rough sloping boundaries in the deep ocean and how they can be observed using fiber-optic cables.
